Attendance Requirements
At HISD, missing more than 10 percent (or 17 days) of school a year can lead to a student not receiving a grade or being retained, but more importantly, it represents lost time in the classroom and a lost opportunity to learn. For complete details on HISD’s attendance policy, please see HISD Attendance Policy.
HISD Code of Conduct
HISD Code of Student Conduct
The Houston Independent School District has established as one of its primary goals the provision of a high- quality educational program for each student in a safe school environment free of disruptions that interfere with the educational process. The purpose of this Code of Student Conduct is to inform all students and parents of their rights and responsibilities and HISD’s expectations regarding behavior and conduct.

School Supplies
It is recommended that students are prepared for school with basic supplies such as pens/pencils, paper/notebooks/folders. Individual teachers may develop specific school supply lists for their course and will notify students accordingly.
The goal is to make sure all students have the tools they need to be ready to learn every day.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS
The Texas Administrative Code requires that “every child in the state shall be immunized against vaccine preventable diseases caused by infectious agents.” (TAC RULE §97.63) A list of required vaccinations is available from our school nurse. If a student fails to comply, they will NOT be allowed to attend school (TAC RULE §97.66). Westside High School will notify the student in writing if they are out of compliance and will follow-up with a phone call to the parent or guardian. It is your responsibility to be sure the school has your current address and phone number on file. Please do NOT disregard this notice from our school nurse.
The following immunizations are required: Click here for 23-24 Texas Requirements
TEMPORARY OR ONGOING MEDICAL CONDITIONS
A student with a temporary or ongoing medical condition that could (a) require medical attention at school, and/or (b) impact his/her ability to thrive in the school environment, needs to be reported to the school nurse. Parents should ensure that both the school nurse and the student’s dean are made aware of the situation, so the school can respond appropriately to the child’s needs. If a student is hospitalized at any time during the school year, the school nurse and the dean should be notified. In addition, HISD has resources available that may be of assistance.
Personal medical information will always be kept confidential.
School Nurse:
Kimberly Stephens - 713-556-5256
ADMINISTERING MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
School Board Policy (in accordance with TEC §22.052) prevents nurses, teachers, administrators or coaches from administering medications of any kind at school without proper consent. A student may NOT carry any type of medication with him/her except for students with asthma or life threatening allergies requiring an Epi pen who have paperwork on file with the nurse in the school clinic. Medications are required to be kept locked in the Clinic. A written medication permission form with the original signatures of both a parent and the prescribing physician must accompany all medication including self-administration prescriptions for asthma or Epi pens. Each medication must be in its original container with an affixed prescription label listing the patient for whom the drug was prescribed, the drug name, and the proper dosage and administration route information. Medication and Treatment Forms are available in the Nurse’s Clinic.
Word to the Wise!
These guidelines apply to ALL medications — both prescription and over-the-counter.
Parent Rights and Responsibilities
We believe that a child’s education is the result of a combined effort among parents, students, and the school.
Parents have rights that are governed by the Texas Education Code and HISD policy. Parents also have responsibilities to support high academic achievement for their child.

Announcement Procedures
Westside Staff:
As we prepare for the exciting start of the 2025–2026 school year, we want to ensure that all visual communications especially those shared with students are clear, engaging, and accessible. Classroom Teachers! Please turn on your TVs and tune in to channel 4.
This year, we are implementing a new requirement for all slides used in presentations and digital displays: Slides must be in full-screen presentation format with dimensions of 16:9.
This change is designed to improve readability and ensure that all students can clearly view the information being presented, whether in classrooms, hallways, or shared digitally.
To support this transition, we highly encourage everyone to utilize www.canva.com. Canva offers a wide range of ready-made templates in the 16:9 format that are both visually appealing and easy to customize. You can create professional-quality flyers and slides, saving time while enhancing impact.
Rolling TV Slide Show Announcements & Social Media Protocol:
- It is essential that the slide dimensions 16:9 are followed to maintain consistency and clarity across all platforms.
- Please email your slides to Barbara.Nassab@houstonisd.org. Slides are due by 9 AM on Fridays for information to be up and running for the following week.
- Max. running time for a slide is 2 weeks. Max. slides per announcement is 1. Every announcement is equally important, so do not multiply your air-time with duplicate information.
- You must update/refresh your slides every 2 weeks for recurring activities; stale slides result in lack of interest in the slide show.
- Emails submitted by students will be rejected unless the Coach/Sponsor/Director is copied on the email.
- Classroom teachers, please turn on your TVs and tune in to channel 4 so students have access to the rolling announcements.
Thank you for your attention to this update and for your continued commitment to excellence at Westside High School.

Fundraising Procedures & Approval Form
FUNDRAISING PROCEDURES
Westside High School is required to maintain accurate records of all fundraising activity. Aside from the financial record keeping, this protocol also allows us to avoid duplication and minimize the number in progress at one time which would dilute your efforts.
All fundraisers require prior approval; please adhere to the following procedure that applies to your fundraiser.
I. WHS Student Activity Fund
- All fundraisers that involve student participation must run funds through the WHS Activity Fund. This section also applies to parent-run fundraisers not handled by the PTO, ABC or MBC (see II below).
- When planning your fundraising activities for the year, please remember that students may only participate in two fundraisers per organization per school year. The maximum duration of any fundraiser is two weeks.
- If you are selling any item other than food please remember to figure sales tax into the price charged for the item being sold. Sales tax will be taken out of the money turned in to Ms. Kleis at the time it is receipted and will be deducted from the amount put into the activity account.
- All bills for fundraisers should come to Ms. Kleis for payment from the activity account that is doing the fundraiser. Profits will be determined after all bills have been paid pertaining to that fundraiser.
- Form AF-104 must accompany collection of funds.
- Only food items that are pre-ordered and delivered at a time when they will not be consumed on campus will be approved. (Examples would be cookie dough or pies baked to order.)
- Submit the WHS Fundraiser Approval Form and HISD Permission Form AF-108 at least two weeks prior to the commencement of your event. You will receive a copy of the WHS form once approved. The HISD form is required by the district and provides documentation to code the deposits and disbursements to the proper student activity account.
II. PTO, ABC and Music Boosters
- Parent-run fundraisers not involving student participation may alternatively be handled by the WHS Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), Athletic Booster Club (ABC) or Music Boosters if eligible.
- All deposits and disbursements related to the fundraising event will be handled by that organization’s Treasurer. The organization’s guidelines related to handling proceeds apply.
- Only food items that are pre-ordered and delivered at a time when they will not be consumed on campus will be approved.
- Submit the WHS Fundraiser Approval Form at least two weeks prior to the commencement of your event. You will receive a copy of the WHS form once approved.
Forms are available from, and should be returned to, Ms. Tran in room A140. Once approved, the event is recorded, Form AF-108 (if applicable) is initialed and given to Ms. Tran and a copy of the Fundraiser Information Form is returned to the sponsor, coach, director or organization president.
After your event has been approved, you may publicize the fundraiser during morning announcements, on our bulletin boards in the Commons, in the weekly news and/or on our website. If you need a facility reservation, please complete the required form.
